5 A Day Recipe Search

Search Tips

Entering keywords or ingredients

Use the Enter keywords or ingredients field to search for recipes that contain specific words. When you enter keywords, the system searches through all the fields in the database and displays a list of recipes that contain the specified keywords.

When entering more than one keyword, you can perform an OR or an AND search by combining the keywords entered with the "Any of these words" or "All of these words" options.

Note: Do not connect keywords with AND or with OR. The system ignores these connectors and uses the selected "Any of these words" or "All of these words" option for the search. Type keywords using these tips:

To find... Type... Example/Results
One word All or part of the word Keywords: pea

Results include recipes that contain pea and recipes that contain all other words that begin with that string of letters, such as peanut, peach, and pear.
Any search word Two or more words and select the "Any of these words" option Keywords: green pea

Results include recipes that contain green or pea and recipes containing words that begin with green or pea, such as greens, peas, peanut, peach, and pear.
All search words Two or more words and select the "All of these words" option Keywords: green pea

Results include recipes that contain both green and pea and recipes containing words that begin with green and pea, such as greens, peas, peanut, peach, and pear.

Ignored words and punctuation marks

The system ignores all numbers and punctuation marks entered in the Enter keywords or ingredients field. For example, if you enter "peach, apple; cobbler, 30 minutes" as your search criteria, the system drops the comma, semicolon, and number, and treats the search as if you entered "peach apple cobbler minutes."

Noise words

Words such as "and," "of," "after," "about," "where," "it," and "the" are regarded as noise words. These words are used frequently and are likely to show up several times in the course of a single written paragraph. To keep search time to a minimum, the system ignores such words when searching.

Noise words are also not included at the top of the Search Results page as part of your search criteria. For example, if you entered "peas and onions" the system displays "peas onions" as your search criteria at the top of the Search Results page and searches based on the option selected for "Any of these words" or "All of these words."

  • If you enter "peas and onions" and select "Any of these words" (the default value) the system searches for recipes that contain either peas or onions.
  • If you enter "peas or onions" and select "All of these words," the system searches for recipes that contain peas and onions.

Note: Be careful when entering partial search criteria, as the system may consider some partial search criteria as noise words. For example, if you are searching for cantaloupe recipes and enter "can" as the search criteria, the system considers the keyword as a noise word and will not return results for cantaloupe.
