If you are currently enrolled in college you should start your search for study abroad opportunities by contacting the persons who manage study abroad programs at your institution. These individuals can provide information, counsel you on options, and assist you in making preparations. Most study abroad coordinators can provide you with information about different programs offered by other institutions and organizations in addition to any that are directly operated by your institution.

General Internet Information

There are many Internet sites that provide information on study abroad opportunities for college-level students. Many postsecondary institutions provide information on their study abroad programs on their Web sites, especially if these programs are open to students from other schools. In addition, you can use one of the large Web search engines such as Yahoo!, Lycos, Alta Vista, and others.

General Study Abroad Information and Links:

American Institute for Foreign Study provides extensive information and links relating to study abroad, including U.S. institutions that offer complete degree programs overseas.

Council for International Educational Exchange (CIEE) provides information on all aspects of educational exchange and travel, including practical assistance with matters such as obtaining international student identification cards.

Digital Education Network's EduFind International provides comprehensive information and links on studying abroad around the world, and includes information for international as well as U.S. students.

Independent Education Consultants Association (IECA) provides information on studying abroad and a database of consultants who specialize in advising students, parents, and educators.

Learning Abroad Center is a Web site maintained at the University of Minnesota that provides lists and links to thousands of study abroad opportunities.

Study Abroad.Com is a megasite devoted exclusively to comprehensive information and links about studying abroad.

World Learning is the Web site of the former Experience in International Living that deals with postsecondary study abroad opportunities.

Federally Sponsored Opportunities:

Fulbright Exchange Program is the largest federal academic exchange program, and some aspects of it are available to undergraduates.

Institute of International Education Sponsored Programs provides opportunities for study abroad in subjects that are important to the national interest in foreign affairs, such as languages and cultures.

U.S. Department of State Education and Exchange Programs describes the many study and exchange programs operated by the United States Information Agency and its partner organizations.

Interagency Working Group on U.S. Government-Sponsored International Exchanges & Training links to federal agencies other that USIA which offer study and exchange programs. Some, but not all, of these are available to undergraduates.
