Jerry Bridges Assumes Chief Financial Officer Post for National Service Agency

(Washington, D.C.) — Jerry Bridges, former controller of Johns Hopkins University, begins serving this week as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for the Corporation for National and Community Service, following his appointment by President George W. Bush and confirmation by the U.S. Senate weeks ago.

As CFO, Bridges oversees all financial management activities of the Corporation, including grants, procurement, and administrative management functions, as well as other support programs necessary for effective Corporation operations. He is also responsible for developing and maintaining an integrated accounting and financial management system, including financial reporting and internal controls.

“In bringing Jerry Bridges' wealth of experience and expertise to our service agency, the Administration has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening service and volunteering in America,” said Corporation CEO David Eisner. “We will look to Jerry to nudge the bar even higher as we continue to refine our already high standards of financial management. He will help us ensure both the effective and efficient advancement of our vital service mission.”

Bridges most recently held the position of controller of Johns Hopkins University for 18 years. Prior to that, he served in a variety of financial and accounting capacities for several federal agencies, including the U.S. Information Agency, the Office of Management and Budget, and the State Department. Bridges, who is licensed as a Certified Public Accountant in Virginia and Maryland, received a Master of Business Administration from the University of Dayton and a Bachelor of Science in Commerce from the University of Kentucky.

“The Corporation for National and Community Service provides services that touch the lives of millions of Americans in need,” Bridges said. “Sound financial management is crucial to ensuring these services are delivered effectively. I am honored to join the Corporation’s efforts in these vital areas.”

In announcing the appointment, Eisner thanked Andrew Kleine, who served as acting CFO for most of the the past 22 months. “The Corporation has been blessed to have had such an engaged, talented and wise person in the acting CFO capacity during this time of transition. Andrew has performed superbly, helping us drive up efficiency and accountability while driving down costs. And we are grateful that Andrew will continue to use his remarkable talents to help advance the national service mission as Deputy CFO,” Eisner said.

Jerry Bridges was nominated by the President on March 7, 2006; his nomination was approved by the Senate Committee on Labor, Health, Education and Related Agencies on May 17, 2006; the full Senate confirmed him on May 19, 2006; and, he began serving Monday, July 3, 2006.

The Corporation for National and Community Service improves lives, strengthens communities, and fosters civic engagement through service and volunteering.
