Our Work

Towards achieving our mission and vision, our programming is guided by an organizational framework that focuses our priorities on place, integrating key approaches, and emphasizing key elements to impact the success of children, their families, and their communities.

We provide grants in the following geographic regions:

In the United States

Why Focus on Place?

Understanding the limitations of our resources, our drive to make a clear impact, partnered with our experience and history in working in communities leads us to focus our work in three priority locations: Michigan, Mississippi and New Mexico.

We will also fund other promising ventures across the United States. There’s tremendous opportunity and innovation happening, and we will consider opportunities to learn from innovation, to help catalyze work in other places in the US, and to also bring that learning back to the places where we are focused on moving that indicator needle on behalf of children. Ultimately, we will invest throughout the country, but with the priority on Michigan, Mississippi and New Mexico.

Key Strategies for Approaching Our Work

Race and Place as Critical Factors in Children’s Success
Our efforts to achieving racial equity will include removing present day barriers to equal opportunities. This may be accomplished through different strategies including – but not limited to – eliminating institutionalized discriminatory policies and practices, and working in neighborhoods of concentrated poverty to improve opportunities for quality education, health, safety, and economic security.

As we look for ways to keep our country prosperous, we need to make the next generation a significant priority. Even economic experts agree that child development is the foundation for community development – which, in turn, is the foundation for economic development. Capable children become the foundation for a prosperous and sustainable society.

A Commitment to Leadership

To capitalize on our rich legacy, leadership will remain a core approach to our work. We are particularly interested in how leaders lead in the community and how leaders catalyze policy change at the appropriate policy levels that can propel vulnerable populations to greater opportunities for success.

Advancing Policy for Social Change
In order to have significant impact, we encourage and support efforts that offer an organized voice to the all members within communities, addressing policy barriers at all levels, and intensifying the national attention to children’s success.

Emphasize Early Childhood Development

Since brains are built “from the bottom up,” early life experiences determine the ability to develop subsequent skills. We are committed to supporting efforts to “get it right early,” and increase children’s opportunities for success, and avoid the corrective efforts that can be costly to individuals and society.

Elements that are Fundamental to Children’s Success

There are four dimensions of family and community life that we see as essential for children's success. The Foundation is focusing on integrating these key elements to create more thriving communities for children. Whether through very targeted projects, or those more broadly focused, we will approach this work by building partnerships to create and sustain communities.
