2008 Annual Report

Raising the Volume
We believe that, by “raising the volume” on voices that speak on behalf of
youth, we can more effectively achieve our vision of a nation where all children
thrive. That’s why we’ve invited five guest essayists to share their thoughts
and push for action that is consistent with this vision.
Each of these essays carries a distinctive voice – one that resonates with
our own passion for propelling children to success. The writers were chosen
because of their individual experiences in dealing with issues that affect
children and because of connections to Kellogg Foundation work.
One important voice in this group of provocative thinkers belongs to a
16-year-old from inner-city Detroit – Anjelica Maria Magdalena Bustamante. Not
only has Anjelica provided a stimulating written essay about her experiences and
efforts to overcome obstacles in her life, but she has told her story in an
audio recording that is available for you to hear.
More information about Anjelica and each of the other essayists can be found
below, along with stories from the field that are featured in this year's annual report.
