Land Management Research and Demonstration (LMRD) Program
Thirteen National Wildlife Refuges across the country are now designated as Land Management Research Demonstration (LMRD) Areas. These sites showcase successful management techniques and develop and validate new techniques through applied research. They serve as learning centers and training grounds for anyone interested in land management. They seek out and facilitate research related to the resources they manage. The thirteen refuges were chosen to span the broad range of habitats and management issues found on National Wildlife Refuges.
Bosque del Apache LMRD Program
Focus Area: Wetlands and Riparian Areas of Southwestern North America
Southwestern wetlands and riparian areas have been drastically reduced in abundance and quality during the last century; those that remain have been modified as a result of landscape alteration, increasing demand on limited water supplies, and changes in the physical processes of the system.
Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge offers tremendous opportunities for the demonstration of wetland restoration and management techniques in arid environments . Research focuses include the restoration and management of river fluvial processes, recruitment and maintenance of native vegetation, riparian and wetland restoration and management within highly degraded floodplain areas, invasive species control, integrated wetland management techniques, and regional habitat based management planning to meet life history requirements for migratory birds over large landscapes.
