GSA: 2009 Relocation Tax Tables Now Available on gsa.gov

WASHINGTON — The annual tax tables for calculating the Relocation Income Tax Allowance (RITA) used by federal agencies and transferees is now available on the U.S. General Services Administration’s Web site, the agency announced today. 

GSA published the tables about two months earlier than in previous years, an accomplishment managed by changing the Federal Travel Regulation (FTR) late last year.  Now, the tables can be published as a FTR Bulletin rather than making a formal change to the FTR, an effort which takes much longer.

GSA’s Acting Associate Administrator of Governmentwide Policy Stan Kaczmarczyk signed the Federal Register Notice marking the relocation income tax allowances on February 25, 2009. 

By making the tables available on gsa.gov, anyone with Internet access may find information about updates to the 2009 tables which may reflect changes in the federal, state and Puerto Rico income tax brackets and tax rates. 

The RITA tables are a valuable resource in calculating the tax allowance for relocating federal employees when they file reimbursement vouchers with their agencies for moving expenses.  Taxes are withheld since the money is treated as income. To get the money back, employees file claims with their agencies, and the agencies in turn calculate the tax allowance using the RITA tables.
