Media Advisory: President’s National Service CEO to Speak on Why Service is America’s Solution

Departing CEO David Eisner and Ongoing Board Chair Stephen Goldsmith Discuss Unprecedented Need and Opportunity for National Service at Georgetown Event

As the economic downturn puts more Americans at risk, and as citizen service comes into the spotlight with the Presidential transition, the departing CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service will discuss the growing need and unprecedented opportunity for national service this Thursday at Georgetown University.

David Eisner, who is stepping down this week after five years as President Bush’s national service chief, will join Corporation Board Chair Stephen Goldsmith and CNN anchor Nicole Lapin to discuss “From Dropouts to Downturns: Why Service is America’s Solution.” The event will take place at Georgetown University’s ICC auditorium this Thursday, November 13 at 9:30 am. Media are invited.

America faces tough challenges. Half of the students in our 50 biggest cities don't graduate, 37 million Americans live in poverty, and the economic downturn has put more people and communities at risk. Volunteering and national service offers an effective intervention to tackle these tough challenges. And the momentum for service is stronger than ever on college campuses, in Congress, and in corporate America.

Eisner, who has led the federal agency that administers AmeriCorps, VISTA, NCCC, Senior Corps, and Learn and Serve America since 1993, will address the historic need and opportunity for national service, and Goldsmith will look at what the future holds for service and volunteering.
