DEFENDANT CONVICTED ON COUNTERFEIT CURRENCY, FALSE
DOCUMENT-MAKING EQUIPMENT, AND FIREARM CHARGES

Marcos Daniel Jiménez, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida; William T. Sims, Special Agent in Charge, United States Secret Service; and Julie Torres, Special Agent in Charge, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, announced today that defendant, Noel Young, was convicted on October 20, 2004, on charges of making, passing, and selling counterfeit currency, possessing false document-making equipment, and being a felon in possession of a firearm, a Kel-tec 9 mm semi-automatic pistol and ammunition, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 471, 472, 473, 1028(a)(5), and 922(g)(1).

Young was convicted after a six-day trial before the United States District Court Judge Kenneth A. Mara in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Young and co-defendant, Glosden Lebert, made, passed, and sold counterfeit currency. They were arrested after an agent made several undercover buys of counterfeit currency. Young and Lebert also made and sold fraudulent Social Security cards, Florida driver's licenses, and Florida identification cards, which they sold to customers in the Lauderhill area. A federal search warrant of Young's residence was executed and agents discovered computer and electronic equipment, together with hundreds of false identification cards, false driver's licenses, passport photographs, and Social Security cards, as well as over $24,000 in counterfeit currency at the residence.

Young faces a maximum sentence of twenty (20) years' imprisonment on each of the counterfeit currency charges; fifteen (15) years' imprisonment on the document-making equipment charges; and ten (10) years' imprisonment on the felon in possession charges.

On October 7, 2003, Lebert pleaded guilty to passing counterfeit currency, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 472. On May 7, 2004, Lebert was sentenced to fourteen (14) months in prison.

Mr. Jiménez commended the investigative efforts of the United States Secret Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Laurie E. Rucoba.
