AMMUNITION
AND EXTENSIVE CRIMINAL HISTORY Jackson,
TN - Terrell L. Harris, United States Attorney for the Western District
of Tennessee and James M. Cavanaugh, Special Agent in Charge, Bureau
of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Nashville Field
Division, announce that on November 13, 2003, James Lee WOODS, age 54,
was sentenced in the Federal District Court in Jackson, TN, for being
a felon in possession of ammunition, a violation of 18 U.S.C., Section
922 (g)(1). WOODS
was sentenced by United States District Court Judge James D. Todd to
115 months incarceration and Judge Todd placed WOODS on three (3) years
of supervised release which WOODS must complete upon his release from
prison. WOODS pleaded guilty to the above-described violation on August
19, 2003. This
investigation began on January 16, 2002, after Decatur County (TN) Sheriff's
Deputies arrested WOODS on a local contempt of court warrant. During
the booking process at the county jail, WOODS removed two rounds of
.22 magnum caliber ammunition from one of his pockets. Since WOODS has
a criminal history that spans nearly 36 years and five states ( IL,
GA, TX, CA, TN), the ammunition was seized as evidence and ATF was notified.
Additional investigation by ATF agents confirmed WOODS, at the time
of his booking, was a felon in possession of ammunition in violation
of Federal firearms laws. The successful resolution of this case is a result of the investigative efforts of ATF Special Agents, Deputies from the Decatur County Sheriff's Office, and Parsons Police Department Police Officers. Assistant United States Attorney Jerry Kitchens prosecuted the case for the government.
