Clayton Lee Waagner -  Apprehended

On Thursday, February 22, 2001, at approximately 10:30 p.m., CLAYTON LEE WAAGNER escaped from the DeWitt County Jail in Clinton, Illinois, where he was being held awaiting Federal sentencing for firearms violations.

The US Marshal's Service, the Illinois State Police, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and the FBI are currently searching for WAAGNER.

Waagner has scars on his right knee, right ankle, and nose. He has a discolored tooth on the right side of his mouth.

Remarks: 

Due to previous frostbite injuries on his hand and toes, Waagner may have limited use of his left hand and may walk with a limp. He is known to be anti-abortion and has allegedly made threats against abortion clinics and doctors. Waagner is a heavy cigarette smoker. He is known to frequent casinos and favor Crown Royal bourbon. He has survivalist skills and may be heavily armed. Waagner may present himself as a law enforcement officer.

History of Clayton Lee WAAGNER

  • In 1975 WAAGNER was convicted of stealing a motorcycle in Virginia; and in 1978 he was convicted of burglary in Georgia.
  • In 1979 WAAGNER was sentenced to 4-25 years in prison in Cuyahoga County, Ohio for two felony counts of Aggravated Burglary; and in 1992 he was sentenced to 4-10 years after pleading guilty in Preble County, Ohio to Attempted Robbery.
  • September 12, 1999 WAAGNER was caught with several stolen firearms. He later told an ATF Agent he would have killed the arresting officer had his (WAAGNER's) family not been present at the time.
  • In December 6, 2000 WAAGNER pled guilty in Federal court for being a felon in possession of a firearm and to transporting a stolen vehicle across state lines.
  • In February 22, 2001, WAAGNER escaped from custody in DeWitt County, Illinois. He was subsequently placed on the U.S. Marshal’s Top 15 Wanted Fugitive’s List. After being suspected of robbing a bank in Pennsylvania, he was later placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List.
  • On May 19, 2001 WAAGNER may have rented and tested two firearms in Knoxville, Tennessee.
  • On May 26, 2001 and on other dates, WAAGNER was profiled on the America’s Most Wanted television program.
  • On or about July 15, 2001 WAAGNER may have purchased a Beretta pistol in Franklin, Tennessee.
  • On September 7, 2001 WAAGNER was involved in a car accident in Memphis. He fled the scene, but left behind a pipe bomb, a rifle, a shotgun, ammunition, black powder, and a dash-mounted revolving blue light.
  • On November 23, 2001 WAAGNER may have visited Carrolton, Georgia. While there, WAAGNER reportedly provided evidence that indicates WAAGNER was responsible for a series of hoax anthrax letters mailed to clinics nationwide. He also reportedly claimed to have identified 42 clinic workers he plans to murder. At the time, WAAGNER was reported to have been wearing a short beard.
  • On November 27, 2001 a credible sighting of WAAGNER was made at a Kinko's store in Norfolk, Virginia.
  • On December 1, 2001 another WAAGNER sighting was reported at a store in Birmingham, Alabama, where he reportedly purchased badges, a digital camera, holographic equipment, and a bullet-proof vest.

In court, CLAYTON LEE WAAGNER stated that his lone regret was that he did not shoot a physician who provides abortions.
