Washington, D.C. -- On July 13, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator and Special Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan, Andrew S. Natsios, will embark on a 7-day assessment mission to northern and southern Sudan. During his trip, Mr. Natsios will observe first hand the humanitarian situation in Sudan and meet with Sudanese government officials, non-governmental organizations and the United Nations representatives.

He will also examine current relief programs and efforts by the United States government and other donors to determine how current assistance programs can be improved. The trip will begin in Khartoum on July 15th and conclude on July 22nd in Nairobi, Kenya.

Mr. Natsios will visit camps for persons who have been displaced by both conflict and drought conditions, and will discuss these issues with non-governmental organizations and United Nations humanitarian relief operations both in southern and northern Sudan.

USAID programs in Sudan provide funding for food and development including assistance for the basic health care necessary to protect vulnerable, malnourished people from opportunistic diseases. Efforts include vaccination programs and the treatment of malaria and diarrheal diseases. To reduce the population's dependence upon food assistance, USAID has also provided seeds and tools and helped maintain the health of livestock. In addition USAID supports development programs to strengthen civil society, improve food security and promote conflict prevention efforts.

The United States has been the largest donor of humanitarian assistance to Sudan during the span of the country's civil war, providing over $1 billion in assistance in the past decade.

The U.S. Agency for International Development is the U.S. government agency that provides development and humanitarian assistance worldwide.
