Secretary Gutierrez Visits UPS Olympic Warehouse in Beijing

BEIJING—U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez today toured UPS’s Olympic Warehouse in Beijing to see first hand how the official sponsor of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games will be delivering the event to the world. In remarks to reporters after the tour, Gutierrez expressed his condolences on behalf of the United States to the people of China and all of the victims and family of the victims who have suffered from the earthquake in Sichuan province.

Gutierrez highlighted UPS as an example of how American companies are helping to grow the global economy and said trade and investment are strong building blocks for economic growth.

“Open markets level the playing field, encourage trade and investment and create an economic environment where U.S. firms would want to do even more business in China,” Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez is in Beijing meeting with senior Chinese officials to discuss our bilateral trade relationship and promote U.S. exports. He will also address intellectual property rights, burdensome regulatory regimes, and other key bilateral issues.

“UPS is a proud American brand that combines more than a century of experience with business creativity,” Gutierrez said. “As China gears up for the 2008 Olympic Games, the efficient delivery of an enormous volume of packages is essential and UPS is playing a logistical support role for the Olympics. A visit to this UPS Olympic Warehouse demonstrates the supply chain benefits of welcoming innovative businesses.”

UPS has more than 4,500 employees throughout China; operates offices in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou; and has a large logistics infrastructure that includes more than 60 distribution centers.
