Recreation Sites

Recreation opportunities in southeast Oregon are plentiful and widespread. Popular activities include camping, picnicking, sightseeing, and exploring the open country on foot and horseback. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are winter favorites at higher elevations. Visitors also enjoy biking mountain roads, photographing landscapes, wildlife and wildflowers, and taking long weekends for backpacking. Many take a few hours for auto touring while others occupy weeks at a time hunting for big game, several upland and migratory bird species and abundant coyotes to name a few. Anglers head to the Donner und Blitzen River and Mann, Fish, and Wildhorse Lakes, and Chickahominy, Moon, Krumbo, and Warm Springs Reservoirs. Visiting special places like Riddle Brothers Ranch, the Kiger Wild Horse Viewing Area, the historic P Ranch and Sod House Ranch, the Alvord Desert, Diamond Craters Outstanding Natural Area, and the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is also must. Some activities, such as motorized access for winter recreation and organized group functions, may require a special-use permit from BLM.
