APIRS (Aquatic Plant Information Retrieval System) is a free online resource devoted to freshwater aquatic and wetland plants, as well as terrestrial and aquatic invasive plants. The database includes annotated citations for more than 65,000 research articles, books and reports about plant ecology, physiology, utilization and control. It includes items in many languages dating back to the 18th century.

ARM Bibliography (Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program)

This search-and-retrieval tool provides access to information about journal articles, technical reports, and conference proceedings published by ARM Scientists and infrastructure staff members. CRIS is the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) computer-based documentation and reporting system for ongoing agricultural, food and nutrition, biological, and forestry research. CRIS also contains research information on projects conducted by the USGS Biological Resources Discipline (BRD).

FIPS 55 Database

FIPS55 is the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS), which contains codes for named populated places, primary county divisions, and other locational entities of the United States and areas under the jurisdiction of the United States. FIPS55 data maintenance is the responsibility of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Under the authority of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the USGS is disseminating the data, and is the only Federal agency authorized by NIST to do so.

Fire Ecology Database

The E.V. Komarek Fire Ecology Database is comprised of bibliographic citations to a broad collection of fire ecology literature. All papers from the Proceedings of the Tall Timbers Fire Ecology Conferences, 1-21, are in the database and include an abstract for each entry. The NWRC library has many of the conference proceedings and papers listed in the database.

Fire Effects Information System (FEIS)

FEIS summarizes and synthesizes research about the biology and ecology of living organisms in the United States and their relationship to fire. The database contains literature reviews of almost 900 plant species, about 100 animal species, and 16 Kuchler plant communities found on the North American continent. The emphasis of each review is fire and how it affects each species. Background information on taxonomy, distribution, basic biology, and ecology of each species is also included. Reviews are thoroughly documented, and each contains a complete bibliography.

The Bay Bib contains more than 6000 references to works concerning historical as well as up-to-date research and issues of importance to Galveston Bay. GNIS contains information about almost 2 million physical and cultural geographic features in the United States and its territories. GRIN (Germplasm Resources Information Network)

The Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN) web server provides germplasm information about plants, animals, microbes and invertebrates. This program is within the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service.

GRIN Taxonomy for Plants

The GRIN database is a source of information on 461,000 germplasm accessions of the USDA, ARS. The taxonomic portion of GRIN provides the classification and nomenclature for these genetic resources and many other economic plants on a worldwide basis. Included are scientific names for 18,800 genera (14,000 accepted) and 79,600 species or infraspecies (48,800 accepted) with common names, geographical distributions, literature references, and economic impacts.

IngentaConnect provides an index to academic and professional research articles, books, and statistics. The database includes abstracts from 19 million articles from 29,500 publications, including 8,000 online.

IPNI (International Plant Names Index)

The International Plant Names Index (IPNI) is a database of the names and associated basic bibliographical details of all seed plants, ferns and fern allies. Its goal is to eliminate the need for repeated reference to primary sources for basic bibliographic information about plant names. The data are freely available and are gradually being standardized and checked.

ITIS, Integrated Taxonomic Information System

ITIS provides reliable information on species names and their hierarchical classification. The database includes documented taxonomic information of flora and fauna from both aquatic and terrestrial habitats.

ITIS Hierarchical Report

Feature allows users to view a listing, from a single kingdom, of scientific names in hierarchical order. This report includes point-and-click retrieval of information associated with each scientific name in the output.

LaCoast

The Louisiana Coastal Wetlands Conservation and Restoration Task Force Web site (LaCoast) contains information and links relating to restoration projects in coastal Louisiana. The site is funded through the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act (CWPPRA) and is hosted by the USGS National Wetlands Research Center.

National Park Service Nature & Science: NatureBib

NatureBib is the master web-based database for scientific citations presented as bibliographic references. NatureBib merges a number of previously separate databases dealing with natural resource related topics like air, deer, geology and paleontology. In addition, citations from individually maintained databases like NPSpecies and the Water Resource bibliography are imported to facilitate searching.

NCU (Names in current use)

The printed edition of NCU-3 was published in 1993 by Koeltz Scientific Books for the International Association for Plant Taxonomy as vol. 129 of the Regnum Vegetabile series. The introduction by Werner Greuter outlines the principles that continue to govern the format of the database edition. The database has been generated from word processor files used for producing the camera-ready copy of the printed volume of NCU-3.

New York Botanical Garden International Plant Science Center

Index to American Botanical Literature

The database includes botanical literature appearing since late 1995. "America" is defined in the broadest possible sense, encompassing land and marine plants and fungi from Greenland to Antarctica. American territory outside this area, e.g., Hawaii, is not included.

Virtual Herbarium

The Virtual Herbarium is the electronic gateway to the collections of the William and Lynda Steere Herbarium. All plant groups--flowering plants, conifers, ferns, mosses, liverworts, and algae, as well as fungi and lichens --are represented in the Herbarium collection, which is particularly strong in New World specimens. The digital collections, comprising approximately 850,000 herbarium specimens and 120,000 high-resolution specimen images, are updated daily.

NWISWeb Data for the Nation (water resources data)

NWISWeb provides access to water resources data collected at approximately 1.5 million sites in all 50 States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. The database includes (1) surface water, groundwater, and water quality data measured daily or more frequently, (2) annual peak values and peaks above a base flow for stream flow stations, (3) chemical analyses for surface and groundwater sites, (4) geologic and inventory data for groundwater sites, and (5) water use summary data.

The NWRC Spatial Data and Metadata Server (SDMS) provides access to the USGS National Wetland Research Center’s (NWRC) geospatially referenced data, much of which is biological in nature. STORET, EPA's largest computerized environmental data system

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) maintains two data management systems containing water quality information for the nation's waters: the Legacy Data Center (LDC), and STORET. The LDC is a static, archived database and STORET is an operational system being actively populated with water quality data. The LDC contains historical water quality data dating back to the early part of the 20th century and collected up to the end of 1998. STORET contains data collected beginning in 1999, along with older data that has been properly documented and migrated from the LDC. Both systems contain raw biological, chemical, and physical data on surface and ground water collected by federal, state and local agencies, Indian Tribes, volunteer groups, academics, and others. All 50 States, territories, and jurisdictions of the U.S. are represented in these systems.
