Cleveland , OH - Paul A. Unger, founder of Cleveland State University's Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs Unger Croatia Center for Local Government, was presented with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Outstanding Citizen Achievement Award in a ceremony this evening at Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio. The award was presented to Unger in a ceremony that included remarks by Senator George V. Voinovich of Ohio; Dr. Kent R. Hill, USAID Assistant Administrator for Europe and Eurasia; Daniel Rukavina, Ph.D., Rector of the University of Rijeka; Ivan Grdesic, Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia; and Michael Schwartz, President of Cleveland State University.

Mr. Unger, founder and chairperson of the Unger Croatia Institute for Public Administration, is being honored for his leadership in initiating innovative training programs for public officials designed to assist Croatia in its transformation into a more efficient democracy. Since 1995, Mr. Unger has sponsored the participation of more than 50 national and local leaders in professional educational seminars on effective governance at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University , and the Unger Croatia Center for Local Government Leadership within the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University . The success of Unger's US-based programs have catalyzed an educational bridge between Levin College and the University of Rijeka to facilitate faculty and curriculum exchange for the eventual realization of a first-ever-in-Croatia Graduate School of Public Administration for training current and future leaders in Croatia and beyond.

"Paul is a tireless advocate of freedom and democracy in Croatia.  I've worked hard to promote peace and stability in Southeast Europe and I'm grateful to have an ally like Paul in this effort.  I congratulate him on his award and look forward to continuing our work together," said Senator George Voinovich, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

"Paul Unger is exactly the type of person this award was designed to recognize," said Dr. Kent R. Hill, USAID Assistant Administrator for Europe and Eurasia. "Thanks to Mr. Unger's efforts, citizens across Croatia have become increasingly involved in local government, taking an active role in guiding the development of their communities. Through his dedication and commitment, he has made an enormous contribution to the future of Croatia."
