Pollution Prevention (P2)

The objective of this program is to develop and demonstrate technologies, processes, and products that will prevent the formation of hazardous emission or criteria pollutants. The pollution prevention alternatives are often no more costly (and sometimes even less) than traditional process add-on control solutions to air emissions environmental problems. Research is conducted in cooperation with the military services and with private industry to develop P2 solutions. Research conducted in-house is directed toward evaluation and comparison of standard and environmentally beneficial products. A large Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) program is operated to provide industry an opportunity to have their low emitting products verified by EPA. Thousands of potential users of P2 technologies routinely access expert systems developed by ECPB for cleaning and coating P2 alternatives via the Internet.

The Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) is the Department of Defense's (DoD) corporate environmental R&D program, planned and executed in full partnership with the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Environmental Protection Agency. There is participation by numerous other federal and non-federal organizations. Within its broad areas of interest, SERDP focuses on cleanup, compliance, conservation, and pollution prevention technologies.

Solvent Alternatives Guide (SAGE)
SAGE is a comprehensive guide designed to provide pollution prevention information on solvent and process alternatives for parts cleaning and degreasing. SAGE does not recommend any ozone depleting chemicals. SAGE was developed by the Surface Cleaning Program at Research Triangle Institute in cooperation with the U.S. EPA Air Pollution Prevention and Control Division (APPCD).

Coating Alternatives Guide (CAGE)
CAGE is a pollution prevention tool for paints and coatings users. CAGE contains an expert system designed to recommend low-volatile organic compound/hazardous air pollutant coatings that may serve as drop-in replacements for a user's existing coating operation. There is also an up-to-date information base on various coating alternatives.

CAGE was developed by the Pollution Prevention Program at Research Triangle Institute in cooperation with the U.S. EPA Air Pollution Prevention and Control Division (APPCD).
