| Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen (left) presents a framed citation accompanying the Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service to Steven Spielberg (right) on Aug. 11, 1999, in the Pentagon. Cohen presented Spielberg the award in recognition of the impact his movie "Saving Private Ryan" has had on the American people. According to the citation accompanying the medal, "... Mr. Spielberg helped to reconnect the American public with its military men and women, while rekindling a deep sense of gratitude for the daily sacrifices they make on the front lines of our Nation's defense."
