Steve Hedtke, Ph.D.
Associate Director for Ecology

Dr. Hedtke received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He began his EPA career in 1971 at the Office of Research and Development in Washington DC. Since then he has worked in Duluth MN, Chapel Hill NC, Newtown OH, Monticello MN, and RTP NC where he has conducted research and served as Station Chief, Associate Director for Research, Acting Laboratory Director, Acting Division Director, and Special Assistant to the Laboratory Director. In his present position as Deputy Associate Director for Ecology, Dr. Hedtke manages the National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory's (NHEERL) ecological effects research program which develops methods for measuring ecosystem health at large scales and our understanding of how ecosystems are responding to disturbances. This ecological effects research is achieved through a combination of controlled laboratory studies, field experiments, and large-scale surveys managed by the specialized research facilities of NHEERL's Atlantic Ecology Division located in Narragansett, RI; Gulf Ecology Division in Gulf Breeze, FL; Mid-Continent Ecology Division in Duluth, MN with Large Lakes Research Station in Grosse Ile, MI; and Western Ecology Division in Corvallis, Oregon with Coastal Ecology Branch in Newport, OR.
