Helping Client Agencies Meet Their Energy Needs

GSA's Energy Conservation Branch, in the National Capital Region (NCR) offers strategic energy management programs that when followed, may decrease agencies energy consumption - and costs. Services and products provided include:

  • Aggregating customer's electric and gas requirements to procure lower-cost utility services;
  • Performing energy audits to study customer energy usage and data;
  • Retrofitting existing buildings to provide energy savings and efficiency; and
  • Controlling and reducing electricity use through the Energy Curtailment Program to avoid power brownouts or disruptions.

Examples of GSA's achievements in energy efficiency in the National Capital Region include:

  • construction of two Gold LEED buildings: the NOAA Satellite Operations Facility (Suitland, MD), and Potomac Yards 1 and 2/EPA (Arlington, VA).
  • In fiscal year 2006, NCR collected $317,000 for the federal government by selling 8000 tons of recyclables. GSA returns this revenue to the agencies that generated the recyclables, minus a 3.6% administrative fee. This 8000 tons recycled represents a savings of $1.2 million in landfill disposal fees. By recycling 7900 tons of paper (100 tons were cans and bottles), we saved the equivalent of 25,600 cubic yards of landfill space; 133,000 trees; 3 million gallons of oil; 32 million kilowatts of energy; and 56 million gallons of water.

Federal employees can help - by turning off computers and other equipment at the conclusion of the workday, configuring computer equipment to enter power save mode after 10 minutes of inactivity, using task and office lighting purposefully, and reducing plug load (eliminating space heaters, personal refrigerators, and other such equipment).
