This Division of the National Center for Infectious Diseases performs the following duties: monitors the rates of viral hepatitis in the U.S.; provides epidemiologic assistance for outbreaks of viral hepatitis; coordinates and implements epidemiologic studies to define the risk factors for acute and chronic viral hepatitis, its natural history and impact on the health of the nation; characterizes the etiologic agents of viral hepatitis; develops, evaluates, and improves laboratory diagnostic methods; provides viral hepatitis reference/diagnostic services; serves as the WHO Collaborating Center for Reference and Research on Viral Hepatitis; evaluates specific hepatitis control modalities and establishes optimal methods for their application; and develops animal models for human disease primarily in nonhuman primates.
