Child support can be important to custodial parents (mostly women) and their children as a source of income received, as well as to noncustodial parents (mostly men) who make payments to help pay for the costs associated with raising their children.
The Census Bureau surveys collect detailed national information about child support agreements or awards such as reported amounts due and received, as well as other socioeconomic characteristics about custodial parents and their families. Additional child support data about custody and visitation arrangements, noncash support, health care provisions, and paternity are also collected in the Current Population Survey (CPS) or Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP).
