The Power to Lead Alliance

USAID LAUNCHES POWER TO LEAD ALLIANCE Dr. Helene Gayle, President and CEO of CARE USA, speaks at the Power to Lead Alliance signing ceremony.

On December 16, 2008, the Office of Women in Development hosted a signing ceremony between USAID and CARE USA to launch a new public-private partnership, the Power to Lead Alliance.

The three-year alliance will promote leadership in girls aged 10-14 in vulnerable communities in Egypt, Honduras, India, Malawi, Tanzania and Yemen. USAID recently awarded CARE approximately $3.7 million to implement the new partnership, and CARE leveraged an additional $3.7 million in funding through partnerships with Cargill, Oracle and the Vodafone Foundation.

WID Director Katherine Blakeslee opened the ceremony by providing background on the program. Acting Deputy Administrator James Kunder and President and CEO of CARE USA Dr. Helene Gayle signed the document and addressed the audience.

The event was attended by more than 50 people, including Ambassadors from the Republic of Yemen and Tanzania and the Chargé d’Affaires from the Malawi Embassy. Brad Saffer, Senior Director at Oracle Giving, Sheila C. Johnson, CARE Global Ambassador, and Ranvir Trehan, founder of the Trehan Family Foundation, were also in attendance.

Program Description

Length of Activity: September 2008 - September 2011

Objective: The goal of the Power to Lead Alliance is to promote girl leaders in vulnerable communities by: 1) cultivating opportunities for girls to practice their leadership skills; 2) creating public-private partnerships to promote girls’ leadership; and 3) enhancing global knowledge to implement and promote girls’ leadership programs.

Implementation: The program will be undertaken in six countries: Egypt, Honduras, India, Malawi, Tanzania, and Yemen. Illustrative activities include supporting participation and leadership in sports, public speaking, computer lessons, planning and management, and financial and legal literacy.

Additional Information

The Power to Lead Alliance is a part of USAID’s public-private partnership program, the Global Development Alliance (GDA). The GDA mobilizes the ideas, efforts and resources of governments, businesses and civil society by forging public-private alliances. To learn more about this program, see the GDA webpage.

CARE is currently developing a broader girls’ education and leadership initiative to support girls in the world’s poorest countries. CARE’s aim is to move beyond expanding girls’ knowledge to preparing them to influence others in positive ways. The Power to Lead Alliance is a key component of this initiative.
