Malaria: Funding

In recent years, USAID’s malaria funding has dramatically increased with the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI). In June 2005, former President Bush launched PMI, pledging to increase U.S. malaria funding by an additional $1.2 billion over five years, with the goal of reducing malaria-related deaths by 50 percent in 15 focus countries.

In addition to PMI funding, USAID also supports malaria programs in a few other countries in Africa, regional programs in Latin America and Asia, and targeted malaria research activities. Specifically, USAID’s malaria funding increased from $65 million in fiscal year (FY) 2003 to $346 million in FY 2008. Of the total 2008 funding, $295 million (following government-wide rescission) went to PMI, and another $51 million went toward other USAID malaria programs.
