Who's Not Eligible?

The following persons are not eligible for TRICARE:

  • Persons not enrolled in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS).
    • You may be able to register retroactively in DEERS.
  • Persons entitled to Medicare Part A, who do not have Medicare Part B coverage, except for the following individuals:
    • Family members of active duty service members: Medicare Part B not required until the sponsor retires
    • Beneficiaries enrolled in the US Family Health Plan: Medicare Part B not required for US Family Health Plan enrollment. But, if you disenroll from the US Family Health Plan, you must have Medicare Part B to be eligible for any other TRICARE benefits.
  • Dependent parents and parents-in-law
  • Persons who are eligible for benefits under Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA).

Note:

  • If you enroll in the US Family Health Plan,  you will not access care at a military treatment facility (MTF) or under any other TRICARE health plan option in most cases.  If you move or disenroll from the US Family Health Plan, you may use any TRICARE health plan option that you are eligible for and that is available in your area.
  • Individuals who lose TRICARE eligibility or other coverage under the Military Health System are eligible for temporary health care coverage through the Continued Health Care Benefit Program (CHCBP).
