Technical Abstract: Production of acetone butanol ethanol (ABE) by fermentation of renewable resources (green chemistry) has been gaining strength over petrochemically derived butanol. Unfortunately, recovery of butanol by traditional distillation negatively impacts the economics of green butanol. Liquid-liquid extraction is a novel technique that can be applied to recover butanol from fermentation broth. It is viewed that application of this separation technique to recover butanol would make the ABE fermentation from renewable resources an economically competitive process. We will discuss extraction as applied to ABE batch, fed-batch, and continuous systems.
