What is GIS? Geographic Information System (GIS) in simple terms is computerized mapping, and it is used to communicate information with maps, charts, and occasionally reports. Using tabular data associated with each graphic layer of information on the map, GIS Specialists can query, analyze, and display information in a variety of ways. Data can also be combined to provide BLM decision makers with the information they need to manage the pubic lands. GIS maps and analysis also assist the BLM in keeping the public informed about what is happening on public land.
BLM Nevada collects geospatial data using a variety of methods including GPS, on-screen digitizing, and conversion of tabular data and legal descriptions. Data from other Federal, State, and local agencies are also used when available.
