The American Heart Association is asking AAHPERD members to urge lawmakers to
support the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act.
Legislative Priorities
Legislation and Alerts
To further its mission of supporting healthy, creative, and active lifestyles
for all Americans, AAHPERD and its associations are working to educate
the U.S. Congress and Executive Branch on the following legislative
priorities:
Promoting the health and wellness of older Americans through support
of:
- reauthorization of the Older Americans Act (OAA) to help
seniors to stay independent and healthy through meals, caregiver support,
senior center services, transportation, home care, elder abuse protection,
and employment for low-income older workers.

Promoting improved school health education and physical education programs in the U.S. through support of:
- policies, programs and practices that ensure all children and youth engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. The PLAY Every Day Act promotes the national recommendation of 60 minutes of physical activity to kids, families and communities across the United States;
- increased appropriations for the Carol M.
White Physical Education Program (PEP) grants to fund schools to initiate, expand, and improve
K-12 physical education programs (NASPE);
- the "Fitness Integrated with Teaching Kids Act" or "FIT
Kids Act" to amend the No Child Left Behind (NCLB)
Act to support quality physical education and activity for all
public school children through grade 12 and ensures they receive
important health and nutritional information.
Continue support for Title IX, the landmark legislation that prohibits sexual discrimination in any education activity at any educational
institution that receives federal funding:
- Oppose the U.S. Department of Education’s Title IX “Additional
Clarification (NAGWS).
