NOAA Climate Reference Network (NOAACRN)

Information updated on September 13, 2007, 4:23 pm GMT

General Data Description

The U.S. Climate Reference Network (USCRN) is a network of climate stations that is being developed as part of a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) initiative. The first station was installed in Nov 2000 and as of the end of Sept 2007, 113 stations have been installed (112 in the United States and 1 in Canada. For future station information, see CRN's latest newsletter). Its primary goal is to provide future long-term homogeneous observations of temperature and precipitation that can be coupled to long-term historical observations for the detection and attribution of present and future climate change. This data stream provides data from the station located at Barrow, Alaska and from two stations at Stillwater, OK.

Measurement Description

See USCRN documentation at www.ncdc.noaa.gov/crn/elements.html

CRN provides their own qc values for Downwelling Shortwave Hemispheric Irradiance and for Surface Infra-Red Temperature.
The qc flags are as follows:
  • 0 means good
  • 2 means suspect
  • 3 means erroneous

Temporal Coverage

For Barrow, AK:
The data began on 2002-08-09.

For Stillwater, OK:
The data began on 2002-03-12.

The newest data are available with a 3 day delay.

Area Covered
