Recreation
Recreation use in Eastern Nevada is dictated by the beautiful but harsh environments of the Great Basin and Mojave deserts. Visitors to the Ely District will experience wide open expanses which lack modern towns and facilities common to other parts of the west. Solitude and untrammeled environments are the rule not the exception.
Primary recreation activities to be found in the Ely District include driving for pleasure, fishing, camping, trophy big game hunting, wildlife viewing, mountain biking, horseback riding, Off Highway Vehicle exploration, trail riding, competitive events, cultural tourism, caving, rock climbing and rock hounding. Hundreds of miles of multiple use trails are available to explore as well as twenty two wilderness areas totaling over one million acres. Eastern Nevada is truly a Mecca for those looking for multiple use recreation in an isolated and uncrowded setting.
Information and education are key components of recreation management in the Ely District. Numerous publications, including a Eastern Nevada Recreation Guide, Developed recreation site brochures, maps, environmental ethics brochures, and signs have been developed to help educate recreationists on land use ethics. Responsible recreation is essential to ensure your public lands remain open to multiple use recreation.
Enjoy the beautiful expanses of Eastern Nevada and please remember to stay on established roads and trails, “leave no trace,” and “pack out, what you pack in.” Also, be prepared for wide temperature changes, and be alert for fire/fuels conditions and seasonal restrictions.
