Overview

Microbial Genomics and Bioprocessing (MGB) develops food safety and biosecurity information and technologies preventing foodborne illness while limiting the number and size of food recalls. This research teams development of molecular tools are to detect and trace the source of foodborne outbreaks (This technology was recently transferred to CDC); Developments of technology for risk-based inspection by USDA-Food Safety and Inspection Service. Working with the FBI as part of the Amerithrax investigation to identify bacterial    contaminant in Anthrax letters.  Oversees the maintenance and distribution of the world's largest free collection of microbial strains, which are widely used in scientific and industrial applications including the production of biofuels and value added products from agricultural commodities.  Learn more about MGB research projects here.
