Miner donning a self-contained self-rescuerThis videotape deals with the experiences of two miners in escaping an underground coal mine fire in 1988. It illustrates the importance of knowing effective self-rescue and escape procedures. During their interviews the miners describe:

  1. How they received and interpreted the initial warning to evacuate the working section.
  2. Problems with self-contained self-rescuers.
  3. Leadership roles and how leadership emerged during the escape.
  4. Types of behavior exhibited by various crew members.
  5. Decisions that were made and who made them.
  6. The importance of knowing the escapeways in the working section.
