Citation: Kurtzman, C.P., Statzell-Tallman, A., Fell, J.W. 2004. Tetrapisispora fleetii sp. nov., an ascosporogenous yeast in the saccharomycetaceae. Studies in Mycology. 50:397-400.

Interpretive Summary: This work describes a new yeast species isolated from a food processing plant in Georgia, USA. The yeast was identified as new because its diagnostic gene sequences, which were compared with the species-specific diagnostic gene sequence database developed at NCAUR, showed no close match with any known species. From phylogenetic analysis, this species is assigned to the small genus Tetrapisispora, an addition that will allow a better understanding of the genetic diversity of the genus. Having this new species in our database will expand its utility for recognition of species of agricultural interest because other members of Tetrapisispora are associated with plants and plant residues.

Technical Abstract: A new species, Tetrapisispora fleetii (type strain NRRL Y-27350, CBS 8957), is proposed that was isolated from a food processing plant in Georgia, USA. Genus assignment is based on phylogenetic analysis of nucleotide sequences from ITS and domains D1/D2 of large subunit (26S) rDNA. The species is named in recognition of the extensive research contributions of Professor Graham Fleet.
