What is Alinia used for?
Alinia is used to treat diarrhea caused
by the parasites Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia
lambia. The suspension is indicated for patients 1 year
of age and older. The tablets are indicated for patients 12
years of age and older. Safety and effectiveness of Alinia
is not known in patient with human immunodeficiency virus
(HIV), patients with immune problems, or children less than 1.
What should I tell my doctor or healthcare provider?
Tell your healthcare provider if you:
- have diabetes, because Alinia contains
sucrose, a type of sugar
- have or had liver problems
- have or had kidney problems
- have or had bile or gallbladder
problems
Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you
take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines,
vitamins, and herbal supplements. Some medicines may affect
how Alinia works or Alinia may affect how your other medicines
work.
What are some possible side effects of Alinia? (This

Some possible side effects with Alinia include:
- abdominal pain
- diarrhea
- vomiting
- headache
When these side effects occur, they are generally mild and
go away in a short time.
