Public Lands River Recreation & Conservation Information National BLM River Database – This online searchable database lists the floatable and boatable sections of river that the BLM manages. The database provides information useful to river enthusiasts, river managers, and conservationists. NLCS Wild, Scenic, & Recreational Rivers Web Site – BLM's Office of National Landscape and Conservation System (NLCS) is responsible for policy and oversight for portions of 38 Wild and Scenic Rivers located within five western states for a combined total of over 2,000 miles. They are managed to protect outstanding scenic, recreational, geologic, fish and wildlife, historic, cultural, or other values and to preserve the river in its free-flowing condition. There are three classes of protected rivers: Wild, Scenic, and Recreational. Table of BLM Wild, Scenic, & Recreational Rivers (September 2005) – This table lists the BLM-managed rivers in order of designation, and includes the public law number, and date of designation for each river. The table also lists mileage along each river section as designated as Wild, Scenic, or Recreational. Total miles and acreage protected figures are also included. River-Related Partners The BLM officially partners with each of the following river-related organizations or activities: America Outdoors – The website of this association allows viewers to search by state or activity to find an outfitter or tour operator that provides the perfect water-based recreational outing for your family or group. American Rivers – A national non-profit conservation organization dedicated to protecting and restoring healthy natural rivers and the variety of life they sustain for people, fish, and wildlife. American Whitewater – A non-profit organization dedicated to conserving and restoring America’s whitewater resources and enhancing opportunities to enjoy them safely. The Headwaters Institute – A non-profit organization providing education that inspires individuals and communities to care for and connect with their watershed. National River Cleanup Week – American Rivers sponsors this popular nationwide stream cleanup program. Since its inception in 1991, more than 500,000 volunteers have participated in over 4,500 cleanup projects across the country, covering over 100,000 miles of waterways. Over the past 15 years, these cleanups have removed over 1,000 tons of litter and debris from America's rivers and streams. This annual event traditionally occurs the second or third week of May. The River Management Society – A non-profit organization working to protect and conserve North America's river resources. Dedicated to holistic river management, their diverse membership includes Federal, State, and local Government officials; educators; researchers; consultants; as well as organizations and citizens from the private sector. River-Related Links Portable Toilet Information – Many portable toilet systems are available which are sanitary, convenient, and dispose of waste directly into an authorized facility such as an RV dump station, sewer line, or sewage treatment plant.
