Kosovo Cleans Up

On January 15, USAID/Kosovo Mission Director Michael Farbman visited three garbage clean-up sites in Mitrovice/a, Skenderaj/Srbica, and Vushtrri/Vucitrn accompanied by the mayors of the respective municipalities.

The clean-up project, part of the Kosovo Cluster and Business Support (KCBS) project implemented by USAID partner Chemonics International, employed road contractor Eurokos to clean-up rivers, housing complexes, and schoolyards in the three municipalities’ town centers.

The two primary project goals were met: to clean up particularly hazardous sites and to provide 3,000 man days of employment (averaging 25 workers per municipality) for unemployed young men. Eurokos reports that roughly 850 tons of garbage was hauled away, while an additional 400 tons were removed by private operators for sorting recyclable materials.

The targeted municipalities have supported the project by placing additional trash dumpsters near clean-up sites to encourage residents to dispose of trash properly.
