On June 22, 2006, the New York City Citizen Corps Council participated in Amtrak's full-day Community Security & Preparedness Expo at New York City's Penn Station. The expo, which aimed to help local residents learn more about ways they can prepare for emergencies, was the result of a collaboration of more than 35 local, state, and federal emergency response and preparedness agencies from across the region.

New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) staff and Citizen Corps volunteers including local Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) members handed out copies of the pocket-sized Ready New York preparedness guide, Citizen Corps brochures, and Citizen Corps program information to commuters and offered tips and answered questions throughout the day. The expo also showcased OEM's updated Ready New York hurricane guide, “Hurricanes and New York City”. Volunteers passed out more than 4,000 guides over the course of the day.
