Approximately 100 participants from more than 20 different regions and representing different Russian political parties gathered in Moscow on June 3 for a two-day conference highlighting “Women in Politics.” The conference was sponsored by the USAID-supported International Republican Institute and particularly focused on the roles of women in regional divisions of national political parties. The conference participants created a new “Cross-Party Association of Women in Politics” and drafted a memorandum pledging that the Association will work to promote the advancement of women at the local, regional and federal levels regardless of their party affiliation. Participants elected an Association Coordination Council made up of two members from each party represented at the conference including “Nash Vybor,” “Yabloko,” the Union of Right Forces, the Republican Party of Russia, the Social-Democratic Party of Russia, Russian Party of Life, and the Union of People for Education and Science (SLON). The Coordination Council officially began working on June 7 and will hold monthly meetings to coordinate activities across the country and facilitate information exchange.
