Miss Universe Raises HIV/AIDS Awareness in Russia

On March 30, 2006, the Russian Association for the Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (SANAM), a vital partner in USAID’s efforts to address STD/HIV prevention among vulnerable populations in Russia, hosted Miss Universe, Natalie Glebova, at its clinic.

Born in a small town outside of Sochi, Natalie Glebova moved with her family to Canada at the age of 12. Since winning the title of Miss Universe in Bangkok, Thailand on May 31, 2005, she has assumed the role of HIV/AIDS awareness advocate. As a part of these efforts, she visited Moscow (March 29-31) at the invitation of UNAIDS, USAID’s partner Transatlantic Partners Against AIDS (TPAA), and the Global Health Council to promote HIV testing, raise awareness, and combat stigma and discrimination.

As part of her visit, Miss Universe received on-site pre-test counseling, the HIV test, and post-test counseling by SANAM’s physicians and counselors. Two central TV channels and MTV/Russia will broadcast Miss Universe’s experience in an effort to promote HIV testing among Russian youth.
