Prior to the Homeland Security Act of 2002, immigration enforcement and benefit functions were tasked to the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). -
When the act became law, immigration enforcement and benefit functions were tasked to separate agencies within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). -
In 2003, the INS ceased to exist and the task of providing immigration benefits and services was given to United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). United States Citizenship and Immigration Services -
