A new study in the NSC’s Journal of Safety Research suggests drivers tend to overestimate their driving skills and underestimate their distraction

NSC Praises Florida for New Primary Seat Belt Law
Itasca, Ill. – After years of work by traffic safety advocates, Florida is joining the majority of states that allow police to ticket drivers solely for
failure to wear seat belts. On April 29, the Florida House voted 95-20 to accept the Dori Slosberg and Katie Marchetti Safety Belt Law, named for two young
women killed in crashes while not wearing seat belts. The Florida Senate also accepted it, 33-4, on April 28.

The NSC is recognizing Workers Memorial Day, April 28, by remembering all workers who have died on the job and voicing its continued commitment
to employee safety. Though there are fewer unintentional workplace deaths today than at any other time since such data has been recorded, each

David Teater to Lead NSC Teen and Distracted Driving Initiatives
The NSC welcomes David D. Teater as Senior Director, Transportation Strategic Initiatives. Teater will lead the NSC’s advocacy initiatives to reduce deaths and injuries associated with teen driving and distracted driving. In 2005, 9 children ages 1-4 died from a fall out of or through a building or structure, according to NSC analysis of National Center for

2008 Traffic Deaths Hit Record Low
The National Safety Council announced that motor vehicle deaths in 2008 achieved the lowest rate since
the NSC began publishing its annual Injury Facts statistical report in the 1920s. The estimated annual death rate from
motor vehicle-related crashes in 2008 was 13 deaths per 100,000 people, a 9 percent decrease from 2007.
Factors include safer vehicles, public education and law enforcement.

National Safety Council Issues Christmas and New Year’s Driving Fatality Estimates
Itasca, Ill. - Year-end holidays are a potential threat to the nation ending the year with a record low number of motor-vehicle
fatalities. As travel increases at the holidays, so too does the incidence of high risk behaviors, like drunk driving.
The National Safety Council estimates there will be 432 motor-vehicle fatalities during the Christmas holiday period and
445 during the New Year's holiday period.
