We intend to increase the number of volunteers in both programs as well as seek other citizen volunteers in our City to help our agency during the annual Coast Guard City USA Festival held the first week of August each year. This festival brings approximately 250,000 visitors to our town of less than 11,000 residents. The presence of numerous Coast Guard personnel, up to, and often including the Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, presents a risk for our community. Additional volunteers will be helpful for this event alone. The City of Grand Haven lies on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan and we often receive strong and dangerous weather patterns because of the Lake. In fact, in 1998, our City experienced straight line winds that caused great damage to our City infrastructure, trees blocking roads in approximately 25% of our community, and a week long power outage. Certainly, trained volunteer citizens could have helped Public Safety personnel during this very serious event.
