Council Description
Overview Richfield Township is located in Roscommon County, Michigan and covers 72 square miles. The Township surrounds the unincorporated community of St. Helen. The area is known for its heavy woodlands and Lake St. Helen. With all it's natural resources the area is known as a resort community with tourism being the largest contributor to the Township's economic base. Richfield Township mirrors the recreational aspect of the entire County of Roscommon, which boast of its three lakes, Lake St. Helen, Higgins Lake and Houghton Lake, the largest inland lake in the State of Michigan. This results in large population increases which significantly impacts local units of goverment and their ability to provide basic services. Roscommon County continues to have one of Michigan's fastest growing populations. The area is threatened with winter storms, flooding, and tornados. Interstate 75 runs through the Richfield Township. Past critical disasters in major cities such as Detroits power outage caused large populations to travel to the northern County of Roscommon. Council Background The Richfield Township Board established the creation of a Citizen Corps Council in January 2003 with the key organization being the Committee for Richfield Township Police,(CFRTP)a 501(c)(3) non-profit. Strategy The CFRTP has public monthly meetings and community events. The events are listed in local newspapers. Since the formation the group has grown in membership to over 50 citizens representing all sectors of the community. Council Results The CFRTP supports the Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS), and Neighborhood Watch groups. They hold local activities and workshops that encompass participation in emergency prepardness, response cabability training, and crime prevention, certified first aid, CPR, fire suppression, boating safety, snow mobile safety, and State Certified Hunter Safety Classes. The CFRTP has holds an annual Child ID and Safety Day for Children under 18. DNA, photos and finger prints are taken. They sponsor a Severe Weather Course for Northern and Eastern upper Michigan, Michigan State Crime Lab program on gathering evidence. Animal rescue and care program and participate in a Health Fair program in the community. They are the major organizers for youth mentoring programs in the area. The CFRTP has funded a variety of police equipment and training for the Richfield Township Police, the K-Nine Dog Team and the Police Reserves (VIPS). The CFRTP is supported by leaders from :Roscommon County Emergency Management, the first responder community; volunteer, community service, faith-and community-based organizations; educational institutions; medical facilities; business; and the community's neighborhood networks. Next Steps The plans for the future is to begin fund raising for a CERT training program for community volunteers.
