Council Description
The City of Pendleton / Umatilla County Citizen Corps Council has as its' primary goal the formation of Neighborhood Watch groups and the enlistment of VIPS volunteers. To-date, we have established 10 Neighborhood Watch teams, and the Pendleton Police Dept. has accepted 12 of our VIPS volunteers. We continue to push this effort, which is done mainly through a door-to-door survey "walkaround" where we tell people about the available programs, and also distribute emergency preparedness information to citizens. Applications are given to interested volunteers for VIPS, and initial meetings with the Police are set up for interested Neighborhood Watch members. Our purpose is basically to empower the ordinary citizen to be able to deal with emergency situations. We do this by arming the citizen with information & knowledge, and then giving them an opportunity to volunteer and use that knowledge. We view ourselves as a clearinghouse, or warehouse, for directing interested citizen volunteers to appropriate first responders. We also plan on offering CPR & First Aid training (made available by the Red Cross) to VIPS and Neighborhood Watch volunteers. We hope to have volunteers in place this Fall to begin giving presentations concerning emergency preparedness at local schools. Partner agencies in these efforts include: City of Pendleton (our grant sponsor), Pendleton Police Department, Pendleton Fire Department, Umatilla County Emergency Management, Hermiston Fire Department, St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton, EOCONO FGP/SCP Program, American Red Cross, Umatilla-Morrow Head Start, Milton-Freewater Police Department, NOAA, Good Shepherd Hospital in Hermiston, and United Way.
