Description

The PKD Foundation, a nonprofit organization formed in 1982, is devoted entirely to research into the cause, treatment and cure of polycystic kidney disease (PKD). PKD affects both kidneys, enlarging them and causing symptoms including pain, bleeding, and kidney stones. Associated problems include liver cysts and aneurysms of brain or abdomen. A high percentage of PKD patients develop kidney failure and require dialysis or transplant. PKD is an inherited condition that often remains dormant until age 30. It affects approximately 600,000 people in the United States and 12.5 million world-wide. The Foundation works to educate social agencies, professionals and the public, and assists patients in finding mutual support groups.
