Description

The American Psychological Association (APA) was founded in 1892 as a professional organization for psychologists. It exists to advance psychology as a science, as a profession, and as a means of promoting human welfare. The APA promotes research, establishes professional standards, maintains a personnel placement service, conducts meetings, holds an annual convention, and provides information to members, the media, students, and the public. Information services include the publication of 18 journals, an abstracting and indexing service, and responding to mail and telephone requests for information. DATABASE: the PsycINFO and PSYCHLIT database abstracts and indexes psychological literature published since 1967. It is the online version of Psychological Abstracts. Sources indexed by this database include books, periodicals, technical reports, and instructional media such as films and audiotape recordings. The information can be accessed using one of several commercial database vendors, by leasing computer disks, or by requesting a search from the Association's PASAR service. Each year, records from over 1,000 periodicals and 1,500 books and monographs are added. The Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms has been developed to aid in indexing and retrieving information, and is available for purchase from APA.
