Description

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) was established in 1844 as the Association of Medical Superintendents of American Institutions for the Insane. It became the American Medico-Psychological Association in 1892, and adopted its present name in 1921. The goals of the Association are to improve the treatment of the mentally ill; to promote research, professional education in psychiatry and related fields, and the prevention of psychiatric disabilities; to advance the standards of all psychiatric services and facilities; to foster the cooperation of all who are concerned with the medical, psychological, social, and legal aspects of mental health and illness; and to make psychiatric knowledge available to other medical practitioners, other scientists, and the public. The APA maintains a library of 6,000 volumes and 75 journal titles, which is open to members of the Association and mental health researchers by appointment. The APA serves as a educational organization at the Federal level.
