- The NIH Women’s Health Initiative is a series of clinical trials and observational studies that spans 15 years. The Initiative is designed to test promising, but unproven measures for preventing health conditions such as heart disease, breast cancer, and osteoporosis. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) sponsors the Initiative, in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, the National Institute of Aging, and the NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health.
