OPEN LETTER TO ALL NEW HAMPSHIRE FIREARMS LICENSEES
CORRECTION NOTICE
November 25, 1998

On October 28, 1998, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms sent an open letter to all New Hampshire Federal firearms licensees advising you of your responsibilities under the permanent provisions of the Brady law. This letter advised you to contact the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to initiate a background check through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) for all firearms transactions. Subsequent to that letter, on November 25, 1998, we were advised that the State of New Hampshire had changed its position and has elected to participate as a NICS point of contact for handguns.

Therefore, in order to initiate a NICS check for handgun transactions, New Hampshire licensees must contact the New Hampshire Department of Safety, Division of State Police at 1-877-288-4867.

Licensees should still contact the FBI’s NICS Operations Center by dialing1-877-FBI-NICS (1-877-324-6427) for long gun transactions. Your call will be answered by an automated menu that allows you to select from several customer services including initiating a NICS background check.

All other information contained in the October 28, 1998, letter is correct. We apologize for any inconvenience this change may have caused.
