Asylum Officer

Key Role

As an Asylum Officer, you will be representing USCIS in its dealings with applicants seeking asylum from all around the world. Your role will include interviewing and adjudicating asylum applications pursuant to the Immigration and Nationality Act and our responsibilities under international treaties and possibly taking part in refugee processing at locations around the globe. Your work as an asylum officer will ensure the integrity and effectiveness of the Asylum Program by adjudicating cases in a fair, knowledgeable and timely manner.    There are eight asylum offices across the U.S., located in New York, NY, Newark, NJ, Arlington, VA, Miami, FL, Houston, TX, Chicago, IL, San Francisco, CA and Anaheim, CA.

 

Your primary responsibilities may include: 

• Interviewing and adjudicating applications for asylum
• Researching relevant law and country conditions and making credibility determinations
• Analyzing security check information to determine whether it impacts the asylum application

 

 

Characteristics of a successful Asylum Officer candidate include:

• Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion
• Ability to research and analyze legal information in order to apply appropriate laws and procedures
• Ability to research and analyze country conditions information in order to correctly evaluate claims for asylum
• Ability to articulate information effectively both orally and in writing
• Ability to elicit testimony in a non-adversarial manner from people of diverse backgrounds regarding sensitive manners

 

Training

Asylum Officers are required to successfully complete a six-week residential basic training program in Dallas, TX, required of all USCIS adjudications officers, and an additional six-week residential Asylum Officer basic training program in Brunswick, GA.
